“This project has the wow factor, giving a voice to the homeless community through theatre. By providing a platform for people who have experienced homelessness to tell their stories, this project is a powerful tool to foster understanding and conversations with the public."

The Hobson Street Theatre Company is based at the Auckland City Mission, and since 2010, has been making and presenting theatre shows that are an authentic reflection of the lived experience of the company's members.

In November 2018, HSTC completed its first short film 'Heavy Heart' which premiered in Manchester as part of the International Arts and Homelessness Summit organised by With One Voice.

The company has toured to Wellington and Dunedin for successive Fringe Festival seasons and received awards including "Best Directed Chaos" (Wellington Fringe) and "Spirit of the Fringe" (Auckland)
"Often funny, but also heartfelt and poignant, the unpretentiousness and rawness of the presentation is refreshingly wonderful to see and should not be missed." - Dominion Post
In 2019 the company was awarded the Arts Access Aotearoa Community Arts Award and was invited to perform in the International Community Arts Festival in Rotterdam in March 2020.  Due to Covid 19 the festival has been postponed but the company looks forward to travelling overseas soon.
September 2020 saw a brand new partnership with Redemption Arts at the Northland Regional Correctional Facility to provide a transitional programme for men from the creative arts programme as they are released from the facility.

HSTC is supported in 2020 by Creative New Zealand, COGS, The Working Together More Fund, Foundation North, and our partners  St Matthew-in-the-City and the Auckland City Mission.
